Forget Alexander Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos - Sidney Crosby is the best hockey player in the world right now. Hyped beyond belief leading up to his #1 overall draft selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005, Sidney Crosby is proving that the hype was justified, and though he has already done some incredible things in his relatively short NHL career, all indications are that this guy is still improving.

After the historic draft lottery that saw Crosby go #1 to the Pens, interest in hockey in Pittsburgh immediately jumped to levels not seen since the prime of Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr. Sidney Crosby did not disappoint, scoring 102 points in his first year in the league, and only narrowly missing out on the Calder Trophy, which went to the Washington Capitals' Alex Ovechkin.

Undaunted, Crosby returned the following year determined to be the best in the game. He put up massive numbers - 120 points - winning the scoring title and earning the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP.

The heady accomplishment in just his sophomore season left pundits wondering just how good this kid could be, but an injury the following season derailed his progress, and his stats suffered accordingly. He bounced back in the playoffs though, and his 27 points helped the Pens reach the Stanley Cup Finals before they lost out to the Detroit Red Wings in 6 games.

The next year Crosby returned to form, again breaking the 100 point barrier. However, the devastating loss to the Wings the year before had left Crosby hungry for hockey's ultimate prize, and come the spring of 2009 he elevated his game to previously unseen heights. Crosby scored 15 goals and had 31 points as he helped his Pens to series victories over Ovechkin's Capitals and arch-rivals the Philadelphia Flyers to set up a Stanley Cup Finals rematch against the Detroit Red Wings. This time Crosby and company wouldn't be denied, and Crosby became the youngest player in NHL history to captain his team to Stanley Cup victory.

In 2009-10 Crosby stunned the hockey world as he completely reinvented his game. Already arguably the best passer in the game, Crosby proved he could score with the best of him, tallying 51 goals during the season, earning a tie for the league-lead in goals with Steven Stamkos. He also worked on his face-offs and immediately gained respect as one of the best in the league on the draw.

Ultimately the hard work wouldn't pay off in the post-season. Crosby and the Pens ran into a red hot goaltender as Jaroslav Halak and his Montreal Canadiens ended Crosby's dream of a repeat championship.

More determined than ever, Crosby returned for the 2010-11 season with a vengeance, and has been far and away the best player in the game during the season. His prolific scoring pace has started to earn him comparisons to Wayne Gretzky, and some claim that he might be able to dominate his peers in much the same way that The Great One did in his era.

Fans will get a rare treat on New Year's Day when they get to see Sidney Crosby and the Penguins take on Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals.
