Formed in the 1970s to compete with the NHL, the WHA enjoyed a 7 year run that lasted from the 1972-73 season until 1978-79 when the league finally folded. However, though in the end it could not compete with the powerful NHL, for a time it was a force to be reckoned with in hockey. NHL legends like Gordie Howe, Bobby Hull and Wayne Gretzky all suited up for WHA franchises at one time or another, and some of the richest contracts of the era were awarded to players willing to make the jump to the upstart league.
Though the WHA ultimately couldn’t make a go of it its legacy still remains with the game, and NHL franchises like the Phoenix Coyotes (Winnipeg Jets), Colorado Avalanche (Quebec Nordiques), Carolina Hurricanes (Hartford Whalers) and the Edmonton Oilers all owe their starts to the WHA.
