More About Brad Richards New York Rangers Jerseys
Among the crop of available 2011 NHL unrestricted free agents no player was more coveted than Brad Richards. Unlike other years when a plethora of superstars were on the open market this year Richards was pretty much the only marquee name to be found and thus there was little surprise that the demand for this former Stanley Cup champion was so high.
Teams like the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs apparently made rich offers to try and land Richards but in the end he chose the lights of Broadway, signing a 9 year deal with the New York Rangers that will likely see him play out the remainder of his NHL career with the Blueshirts.
As mentioned above Richards is a former Stanley Cup winner, having captured the coveted price, along with a shiny Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with the Tampa Bay Lightning back in 2004. Not coincidentally it was John Tortorella - New York's current bench boss - who was coaching Richards and the Lightning back then, and word is having the opportunity to play for Torts again was a big reason Richards chose New York over many other suitors.
His championship experience is just a small part of what made Brad Richards such an attractive commodity during the free agent frenzy. He is also one of the most talented playmakers in the league. Little wonder that the Flames and Leafs wanted him alongside snipers like Jarome Iginla and Phil Kessel. In New York it is a foregone conclusion that Richards will be playing on a line with speedy sniper Marian Gaborik. If Gaborik can stay healthy he certainly has a shot at enjoying a career year with Richards feeding him the puck.
Over his career Richards has been remarkably consistent, and currently sits at 716 points in 772 career regular season games. The bulk of those are assists, but though he is obviously a pass-first player he is capable of putting the puck in the net himself, as evinced by his 220 career goals.
It will be interesting to see how Richards will handle being on a big stage. Though he probably won't be under the microscope like he would have been had he chosen to sign with the Leafs or Flames, New York is as big a sports market as it gets and the Rangers have no shortage of knowledgeable, critical fans and media members. It will definitely be a different environment from those he experienced in Tampa Bay and Dallas. If he's a bust he'll certainly hear the boobirds, but if he can do what Mark Messier did nearly two decades ago and bring this proud Original Six franchise back to respectability you can bet that there will be plenty of fans wearing Brad Richards Rangers jerseys on the streets of New York.
