Though players like Pavel Datsyuk, Ryan Kesler and Mike Richards might have a thing or two to say about it there are many fans around the NHL who will assert that Jonathan Toews is the best two-way forward in the game today. Now, considering the talents of the players mentioned above that is certainly saying something. However, with the resume Toews has built early on in his career to date it certainly isn't a ridiculous assertion.

Before he ever suited up for an NHL game in a Chicago Blackhawks jersey, Jonathan Toews was serving notice to the hockey world just how good he was going to be. In the World Junior Championships he showed his ability to deliver under pressure. Toews was absolutely clutch against future teammate Patrick Kane as he scored three straight shootout goals to help his Canadian squad defeat the rival Americans.

This serious young man was presented with a Jonathan Toews Blackhawks jersey in 2006 when the team selected him third overall in the NHL Entry Draft. Toews played another year of junior before joining the club for the start of the 2007-08 season. The extra year of junior allowed Toews to mature to the point where he was ready to make the leap to the NHL and in his inaugural campaign he didn't disappoint. Despite missing time with an injury he finished with a respectable 54 points in 64 games, earning himself a Calder Trophy nomination as rookie of the year. He'd be beat out for the honor by teammate Patrick Kane.

The following season the Blackhawks, having witnessed the leadership skills of Toews, rewarded their young star by naming him captain. At the age of just 20 he was the third youngest captain in the history of the game. Some might argue that such responsibility at such a young age isn't a good thing, but Toews proved those naysayers wrong, embracing the challenge. Over the next couple of seasons Toews helped turn the Chicago Blackhawks from a team outside the playoffs looking in to a Stanley Cup contender. In 2009 he registered 69 points, and led the Hawks to their first post-season appearance in years. He went on to register 13 points in 17 games, helping the Hawks reach the Western Conference Finals before they finally bowed out to the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

2009-10 was a dream year for Toews. The Blackhawks were a powerhouse right from puckdrop on the NHL season. In addition to his responsibilities to his NHL team Toews also impressed enough to land himself a coveted spot on Team Canada's Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team roster. Eyebrows were raised at the inclusion of the young player, particularly since many proven NHL veterans with international experience were left on the outside looking in. Again, Toews proved his mettle on the biggest stage under the most intense scrutiny. He led the Canadian team in scoring and was arguably the best forward in the tournament as Canada went on to capture a gold medal, squeaking past Patrick Kane and the American squad in a hard fought 2-1 overtime game.

Toews didn't allow the extra workload of the Olympics impact him at all when he pulled out his Blackhawks jersey again. He went on a tear as Chicago approached the playoffs, and just watching his inspired play you knew that Toews was determined to follow up his Olympic gold with a Stanley Cup victory.

Once again Toews delivered helping his team eliminate the Nashville Predators, Vancouver Canucks and San Jose Sharks to set up a classic match-up with the Philadelphia Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals. Ultimately Toews and his Chicago Blackhawks teammates would prevail, and Toews trailed only Sidney Crosby as he became the second youngest player in NHL history to captain his team to a Stanley Cup championship. The Conn Smythe Trophy he received as playoff MVP was simply icing on the cake.

Financial realities in the NHL's salary cap era forced Blackhawks management to dismantle their 2010 Stanley Cup championship team, however Toews and a few other core members like Kane, Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook held the squad together. Despite dealing with an entirely different roster Toews again led the Hawks to the playoffs and gave the President's Trophy winning Vancouver Canucks all they could handle, pushing them to overtime of game seven in their first round match-up before finally bowing out.

You can bet that Toews was far from satisfied at the early playoff exit and in 2011-12 fans can expect him to impose his considerable will on returning the Blackhawks to Stanley Cup contention.
