Though this one time NHL franchise has been defunct for many years now, having moved to Carolina to establish themselves as the Hurricanes, the Hartford Whalers still remain one of the most popular franchises when it comes to merchandise sales.
The Hartford Whalers hearken back to the days of the WHA. Known then as the New England Whalers they were one of the powerhouses of the old World Hockey Association, and boasted all time NHL legend Gordie Howe on their roster. The team was so successful they were chosen as one of four clubs to merge into the NHL when the WHA folded prior to the start of the 1979-80 hockey season.
Though the Hartford Whalers did not win a Stanley Cup during their relatively brief NHL tenure, they did have some good teams, and boasted some true hockey greats on their roster. Not only did Gordie Howe play the first season for them following their jump to the NHL, but his sons Mark and Marty did as well. Other star players to grace their roster over the years include Ron Francis, Mike Liut, Chris Pronger, Brendan Shanahan and Kevin Dineen.
