More About Vintage Calgary Flames Jerseys

Though they actually originated in the southern United States as the Atlanta Flames, in the early 1980s the franchise made the move to Calgary, establishing the Calgary Flames franchise that is still in existence today. The Flames were a competitive franchise right from the time they landed in Calgary, icing stars like Kent Nilsson, Guy Chouinard and Lanny McDonald. As the decade progressed the Flames continued to improve, bringing in star players like Al MacInnis, Gary Suter, Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk, Theoren Fleury and goaltender Mike Vernon. In 1989 this core group of players captured the first ever Stanley Cup in the history of the Flames franchise when they defeated the Montreal Canadiens in 6 games in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Since then the Flames have been back to the Stanley Cup Finals once, in 2004, when they rode the hot goaltending of Miikka Kiprusoff and the inspirational play of captain Jarome Iginla to game 7 of the finals before finally bowing out against Vincent Lecavalier and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Today’s Calgary Flames are struggling to find an identity, but with players like Iginla, Rene Bourque, Jay Bouwmeester and Miikka Kiprusoff they still have the pieces in place to be a playoff team.
