More About Sergei FedorovĀ

When one talks about the greatest Detroit Red Wings of all time, names that are commonly heard include Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and Nicklas Lidstrom. Talk about great Russian superstars and you’ll hear Vladislav Tretiak, Valeri Kharlamov, Pavel Bure and Alexander Ovechkin. For some reason Sergei Fedorov is a forgotten man when it comes to the all-time greats and that is a crime, because this guy was something to behold in his prime. Much like Pavel Datsyuk today, Sergei Fedorov was a superstar on both sides of the puck. One of the smoothest skaters in the NHL he could electrify fans with breathtaking end to end rushes, and on the rare occasion he turned the puck over he could get back in time to break up a scoring chance in his own end.

In 1993-94 Fedorov enjoyed a career year, scoring 54 goals and notching 120 points. For his efforts he was awarded the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP. Amazingly, he also landed the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL’s best defensive forward, the only player besides Doug Gilmour to do so while scoring more than 100 points. He would duplicate the feat in 1995-96, scoring 107 points that year. Eventually circumstances would force him out of Detroit, but not before he’d helped the team win 3 Stanley Cups. He would go on to stops with the Ducks and the Blue Jackets before finishing his NHL career with the Washington Capitals where he served in the role of mentor to a young Alexander Ovechkin.

Today, Fedorov continues to ply his trade in the KHL and Sergei Fedorov jerseys remain a hot ticket both here in North America and in his home country of Russia.
