Few teams around the NHL have had as much difficulty at the goaltending position in recent years as the Philadelphia Flyers. Last year former Ottawa Senators backstop Ray Emery was signed, but after injuries sidelined him, career back-up Brian Boucher was asked to take the reins. He helped the Flyers squeak into the playoffs in the last game of the season, but then injury also forced him out and Michael Leighton took over. Leighton played brilliantly and helped the Flyers make it all the way to game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals. Leighton’s performance earned him a new contract and he was expected to be Philadelphia’s number one guy this season.
Alas, the injury bug bit again. Enter, Sergei Bobrovsky. Sergei who? Yes, he’s not exactly a household name, but so far this season Bobrovsky has been a savior for the Flyers, and has already gained immense popularity from demanding Flyers fans. Bobrovsky’s impressive play has helped the Flyers challenge for first in the Eastern Conference, and his stingy goaltending, combined with the #1 offense in the league has made sure the Flyers are in every game they play.
