More about Matt Duchene

Taken third overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche, Matt Duchene wasted no time showing that he could make the jump from junior, where he’d been a standout for the Brampton Battalion of the OHL, to the big league.

He fit in immediately with Colorado’s stable of young talent, sniping 24 goals and notching 55 points in his rookie campaign. The output was good enough to make him a finalist for the 2010 Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, but he was beat out by towering Buffalo Sabres’ d-man Tyler Myers for the honor.

The following season Duchene would show that he didn’t believe in the so-called “sophomore slump”. He bested his rookie totals for both goals and points, registering 27 and 67 respectively, to lead the Avs in scoring in both categories.

An injury-riddled 2011-12 campaign saw Duchene get off track, but some time plying his trade over in Europe seems to have reinvigorated his game, and he is once again scoring at a prolific rate, notching 19 points in just 18 games to date.

Surrounded by other young stars like Gabriel Landeskog and Ryan O’Reilly, the future looks bright for Matt Duchene and the Colorado Avalanche. Though they might not return to the glory days of Sakic and Forsberg look for the Avs to be a powerhouse in the west as their young talent develops.
