More about Jarome Iginla

One of the NHL’s best power forwards for more than a decade, Jarome Iginla is one of the most respected players of his generation. The long time, now former, captain of the Calgary Flames has racked up more than 500 goals and 1,000 point during his career to date, and many thought that he would retire one day as a member of the Calgary Flames.

While such a scenario may yet play out, for the time being Jarome Iginla finds himself in a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey, having been dealt just days before the NHL trade deadline in exchange for a pair of college prospects and Pittsburgh’s first round pick in next year’s draft.

With huge money committed to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin it seems very unlikely that Pittsburgh will be able to sign Iginla to any sort of long-term deal which means that Iggy is almost certainly a rental player for the powerful Penguins as they attempt to win their second Stanley Cup in the last five seasons.

Pittsburgh has been on an incredible roll even before the acquisition of Iginla, and adding the all-star forward, along with Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray have to make the Penguins the odds on favorite to win the cup this year. However, a broken jaw suffered by Sidney Crosby during Iginla’s debut in a Penguins uniform may change the balance of power in the league, and how long he is missing from the Pens lineup will play a huge part in the Pens’ chances to capture the silver chalice this year.

Even if Crosby is sidelined long term, his absence will not be as keenly felt with Iginla there to pick up some slack. Though not the sniper he was in the prime of his career Iggy is still a big impact player and one of the game’s best leaders. Look for him to be a force for Pittsburgh down the stretch and throughout their entire playoff run, however long it may last.
