About Jack Eichel
Poor Jack Eichel. In just about any other draft year he would have been the number prospect going away. Alas, he had the misfortune of being NHL draft eligible in the same year as a young generational phenom by the name of Connor McDavid.
Like McDavid, Eichel has been on the radar of NHL scouts for years now, despite the fact that he opted to go the college route for his hockey development as opposed to the more popular Canadian Major Junior Hockey League route. As a freshman Eichel absolutely tore it up, scoring 71 points in 40 games. That performance earned him the Hobey Baker Award, making him just the second freshman in U.S. college hockey history – after Paul Kariya in 1993 – to win the award.
Eichel has already proven he can compete among men, playing with the United States team at the 2015 World Championships. He acquitted himself well during the tourney, notch 2 goals and 5 assists in helping the USA to a bronze medal.
