About George Parros
The Montreal Canadiens had an incredible bounceback season in 2012-13. After finishing dead last in the Eastern Conference in 2011-12, the Habs exceeded all expectations in the lockout shortened season, finishing with 63 points in 48 games, good enough for second overall in the conference. However, the injury bug, and shaky goaltending were both major factors that saw the Canadiens shown a quick exit in the first round of the playoffs at the hands of the Ottawa Senators.
Part of the reason the Canadiens saw so many injuries once the physicality reached a new level was the fact that the Habs lacked a true heavyweight, and the Sens felt no reluctance to take physical liberties with the small Canadiens forwards. Brandon Prust has the heart to take on anyone in the league, but he is far from a heavyweight and was dealing with injuries of his own. Not since the departure of Georges Laraque have the Canadiens had a legitimate enforcer patrolling the ice for them. Well, GM Marc Bergevin, an astute hockey man, was quick to recognize what his team needed to improve, and addressed that need this past offseason, acquiring the mustachied, Princeton-educated pugilist from the Florida Panthers.
With just 18 goals in 452 NHL games, Parros is clearly going not going to be counted on in any way, shape, or form for his offense, but his hulking presence on right wing will allow his smaller teammates to do what they do best: score goals. The Parros acquisition might seem like a minor deal now, but look for it to have a major impact in the upcoming season.
