About Devan Dubnyk
If there is a better feel-good story in the NHL right now than Andrew Hammond’s amazing run in Ottawa it has to be Devan Dubnyk’s incredible career makeover with the Minnesota Wild. Dubnyk washed out with the Edmonton Oilers before moving on to brief stops with the Nashville Predators, the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and the Arizona Coyotes. Dubnyk put up respectable numbers with the Coyotes, prompting the Wild to take a chance on him when they ran into goaltending problems. A more mutually beneficial move for a player and team has rarely been seen in the NHL.
Dubnyk was a standout from day one in Minnesota, vaulting the Wild, who had been struggling mightily prior to his arrival, into playoff contention. He played 38 straight games for the club, a franchise record, and in his 39 games of work with the Wild he won 27 games, posted a 1.78 GAA and notched five shutouts. He did cool off a bit down the stretch, but that might have been the result of fatigue more than him finally coming back down to earth. If he can recapture his prime form he should give the Wild a fighting chance against the heavyweights in the Western Conference.
