8 years after jealously watching the rival Edmonton Oilers host the outdoor Winter Classic game the Calgary Flames finally get the chance to host one of their own. The Flames began their NHL days in Atlanta back in the early 1970s. However, due to financial concerns the team was moved to Calgary at the beginning of the 1980s, and the team has thrived in Calgary ever since, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals on three separate occasions and winning the 1989 Stanley Cup. The team has featured some true stars, including current captain Jarome Iginla and former players like Joe Nieuwendyk, Theoren Fleury, Al MacInnis and Mike Vernon.

The Flames will wear a retro style jersey for the Winter Classic game in homage to the old Calgary Tigers. Bright red and yellow the jerseys will stand out in stark contrast to the white ice.
