More About Brent Burns
One of the most underrated defensemen in the league, Brent Burns actually began his career as a forward. However, his versatility and the deficiency on the blueline of the Minnesota Wild saw Burns making the shift to the back end. The move, like many made by Jacques Lemaire, turned out to be a good one, and Burns has quietly turned into one of the best two-way d-men in the league.
Though he battled through injury in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 season Burns came back strong in 2010-11, playing in 80 games and enjoying the highest offensive production of his career, scoring 17 goals and notching 46 points. With his trade value at an all time and only a year away from unrestricted free agency, Burns was shipped to the San Jose Sharks with Devon Setoguchi coming back the other way.
The Sharks, knowing what a valuable commodity they have in Burns, wasted no time locking up the blueliner, extending his contract by five years and paying him 28.8 million dollars over that span.
With Burns in the mix some of the offensive load can now be taken off the aging Dan Boyle. With Setoguchi and Dany Heatley gone, and Burns and Martin Havlat in their places the Sharks have a significantly different look this season. Fans are hoping that different equals better, and if the Burns can help get the Sharks over that final hump and bring a Stanley Cup to the city you can bet that Brent Burns jerseys will be a hot commodity in the city of San Jose for years to come.
