Authentic Pittsburgh Penguins Jersey
One of the teams to join the league during the NHL's first expansion from 6 to 12 teams, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been an NHL franchise since 1967. Early on in their history they enjoyed some success before the untimely death of one of their stars set the franchise back. For much of the 70s and early 80s the franchise struggled to compete with established NHL franchises and even with some of their franchise cousins, however the 1984 NHL Entry Draft would change the Pittsburgh Penguins franchise with one fateful pick.
Following a dreadful 1983-84 campaign that saw the Pens finish in the cellar of the league, the club's consolation was the first overall pick before the start of the next season. Their timing couldn't be better as that season's draft class featured one of the most talented prospects the league had ever seen. The Pens selected Mario Lemieux as everyone predicted and the acquisition marked a huge change in the Pens fortunes going forward.
Lemieux had no trouble making the transition from junior to the NHL, scoring 100 points in his rookie season and winning the Calder Trophy. Over the next few years the rangy center began to challenge Wayne Gretzky for the title of the NHL's best player, and the Pens began to acquire other pieces of complement their superstar center. By 1991, with the addition of stars like Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Paul Coffey and Mark Recchi, the Pens had become an NHL powerhouse. They won back to back Stanley Cups in 1991 & 1992, and probably would have had a third straight in 1993 if not for a monumental upset by the New York Islanders in the playoffs that year.
Today's Pittsburgh Penguins are again one of the NHL's top teams. Much like the teams of the early 90s this club features a pair of superstars in Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin. They reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2008, and won it all in 2009. Though they've been unable to reach the finals since, Crosby has clearly established himself as the best player in the game, and if he can recover from lingering concussion problems there is a good chance he can lead the Pens back to the finals for another crack at the cup.
Cheer on your Pens as they try to reacquire Stanley's coveted mug. Pick up your authentic Pittsburgh Penguins jersey today.
