The #1 overall draft pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, Auston Matthews is the franchise center Leafs fans have been praying for since the departure of Mats Sundin. With size, skill and speed to burn, Matthews is the complete package, and though Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine should give him a run, it is hard to imagine that Auston Matthews won’t run away with the Calder Trophy this season.
Those who question his ability to transition to the NHL probably haven’t being paying close attention to his accomplishments to date. Matthews played in the Swiss-A League during the season prior to being drafted, dominating in a league of men. He went on to play for his country at both the World Championships, and again at the World Cup, a best on best competition featuring the biggest stars in the NHL. He did not look out of place in such company.
As I write this Auston Matthews already has four goals after just two periods of his first NHL game, becoming the first player in NHL history to notch four goals in his career debut. Leafs fans finally have something to cheer about. Their so-called painful rebuild may just have been accelerated by a few years.
