More about Wayne Simmonds

Drafted in the second round of the 2007 draft by the Los Angeles Kings Wayne Simmonds wasted no time showing the hockey world that he was a power forward to be reckoned with. Over his first three seasons with the Kings he put up almost 100 points and close to 300 penalty minutes. His willingness to go hard to the net and play a hard physical game got the attention of Philadelphia Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. When Holmgren made the deal that sent Mike Richards to the Kings, he made sure that Simmonds came back the other way in recompense.

Simmonds was born to play Flyers’ hockey. Big and brash and unafraid he fits right into the Broad Street Bully mentality that has been keeping the Flyers competitive since their heyday in the 1970s. It was immediately evident that his new environment agreed with Simmonds. His first season with the Flyers was the best of his career, and he notched 28 goals and 49 points to go along with 116 PIMs.

He has continued to improve in 2013, and is scoring at nearly a point a game clip, and already has 46 penalty minutes in just 19 games to date. With two Gordie Howe hat tricks in the past week, Simmonds continues to show he excels equally with the puck or with his fists. If the Flyers can ever solve their goaltending woes and make another deep playoff run look for Simmonds to be a key contributor as they go in quest of their first Stanley Cup since 1975.
