More About Steve ShuttÂ
Arguably the greatest NHL team of all time, the Montreal Canadiens of the latter half of the 1970s were an all but unstoppable force. Perhaps the greatest tribute to the depth and the talent of that legendary club is the fact that Steve Shutt – a man who once scored 60 goals in a single season, a Montreal Canadiens record – is often forgotten when discussing the great players that graced the team’s roster.
Yes, Shutt dwelt in the enormous shadows of Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and the “Big Three” on the blueline (Serge Savard, Larry Robinson and Guy Lapointe), but he had some stellar years with the team, and was a key contributor in all five of the Stanley Cups the club won with Shutt on its roster.
His greatest season, unsurprisingly, came in 1976-77, when the Habs enjoyed the best regular season in NHL history. That year, with all their stars firing on all cylinders the team compiled a jaw-dropping 60-8-12 record, finishing the year with an NHL record 132 points. As mentioned above, Shutt set a team record with 60 goals during the campaign. He also chipped in 45 assists for a career high 105 point season.
Though that was Shutt’s best year offensively, he was a consistent producer year after year, playing on the left wing with Jacques Lemaire in the middle and the flashy Guy Lafleur on the right side. Shutt scored 30 or more goals in nine straight seasons with the club, and continued to be a scoring threat until his final season with the team in 1984-85.
He finished his NHL career as a member of the Los Angeles Kings, but will always be remembered first and foremost as a Montreal Canadien and a member of one of NHL hockey’s greatest teams. With such a resume it is little wonder that Steve Shutt jerseys remain a popular choice with Habs fans almost three decades after he last suited up for their team.
