More About Gino Odjick

It’s not very often that a forward that averages slightly over one goal every ten games hears his name chanted on a regular basis by his team’s fans, but Gino Odjick, during his playing days with the Vancouver Canucks, was certainly an exception.

Odjick enjoyed enormous popularity while plying his trade in Vancouver. Though he did score the occasional goal, his “trade” most of the time involved swinging his hammer-like fists at opponents and providing protection for his superstar Russian teammate, Pavel Bure.

Odjick and Bure were an odd couple if there ever was one, but it was a combination that seemed to work on the ice. In fact, a little bit of Bure’s offensive magic seemed to rub off on Gino during the 1993-94 season as Odjick exploded offensively, posting career highs in goals with 16 and points with 29, despite spending 271 minutes in the sin bin that year.

After Vancouver Gino would move on to make stops with the New York Islanders, Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers. However, he could never recapture the magic he had earlier in his career (and he certainly didn’t have a regular opportunity to play with someone as skilled as Bure).

Though it has been well over a decade since Gino Odjick last pulled on a Canucks’ sweater he remains a fan favorite in the city of Vancouver, and you can’t attend a Canucks game without seeing at least one Gino Odjick jersey in the crowd.
