More about Vincent Lecavalier

It is difficult to imagine seeing Vinny Lecavalier in anything but a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey, but this is the new NHL and with a salary cap handcuffing NHL General Managers the era of seeing players spend their entire careers in a single jersey may well be over. Just look at Daniel Alfredsson signing with the Detroit Red Wings this past offseason for further evidence.

Perhaps the change of scenery will be good for Lecavalier. The former Lightning captain and 2004 Stanley Cup champion had seen his numbers and his role with the team declining in recent years. Lecavalier had career highs in goals (52) and points (108) in the 2006-07 season, but his last three seasons with the Lightning only managed 135 points in 168 games. Not horrible numbers, but not the sort of production you'd expect from a player making north of seven million dollars a season.

It must have been a difficult decision for a loyal guy like Steve Yzerman, who himself spent his entire career with a single team, to buy out Lecavalier's contract in the offseason, but the realities of the business could not be ignored, and Lecavalier was given his walking papers (and a wad of cash). Suitors immediately lined up to secure Vinny's services and after some hard deliberation he eventually landed in the City of Brotherly Love. For the past few seasons Philly has been an offensive juggernaut, and having the opportunity to play with skilled forwards like Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, Wayne Simmonds and Brayden Schenn might just give Lecavalier's offensive numbers a boost. At just 33 years of age Vinny still has at least a few good years left.
