Since his entry into the league in the 2005-06 season Alex Ovechkin has been arguably the most dominant player in the game. In his inaugural season he showed his scoring prowess, notching 52 goals and 106 points, making him one of just a handful of players in NHL history to break the 50 goal and 100 point barrier in his rookie year, and earning him the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.
As great as that rookie campaign was, Ovechkin was just getting started. After an "off year" that saw him score just 46 goals and 92 points, Ovechkin went on an absolute tear. His third year he racked up an amazing 65 goals and 112 points, earning the Rocket Richard Trophy as the NHL's leading goal scorer, the Art Ross as the league's leading point scorer and the Hart Trophy as MVP. He would follow that up with a 56 goal, 110 point season that earned him his second consecutive Richard and Hart Trophies.
The 2009-10 season would see Ovechkin miss 10 games due to suspension, injury and personal issues, yet despite missing the time Ovie still managed to threaten to win the scoring title and hit the 50 goal plateau for the 4th time in 5 seasons.
This season Ovechkin is admittedly having a poor season by his standards. With just 12 goals in 36 games he is looking like a pale shadow of himself, and this despite the fact that he is leading the NHL in shots. However, though his hot stick has gone cold he is still producing points, and with 39 he is currently in the top 10 in NHL scoring. With his tremendous talent it is only a matter of time before Ovie gets it turned around, and when he does look for him to go on a tear.
The cooling off of Ovechkin and his Capitals hasn't soured the anticipation of this year's New Year's Day Winter Classic Game at Heinz Field between the Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins one iota, and you can bet that along with Sidney Crosby's sweater, Alexander Ovechkin Winter Classic jerseys will be the hottest selling item leading up to this year's game.
