Nail Yakupov Jersey

Unlike previous years where the number one selection in the NHL Entry Draft was in question - Remember Taylor vs. Tyler? - this year there was no doubt which prospect was going to go #1 overall. Nail Yakupov was the cream of the crop, and though other contenders were certainly talented they were all a level below this Russian superstar.

Looking at Yakupov's numbers during his tenure with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL it is little wonder that the sniper went first overall. In just 107 games with the junior club he managed to rack up 80 goals and 170 points. Of course, as important as those numbers are they don't tell the whole story.

What really had scouts salivating leading up to the draft was the fact that Yakupov doesn't seem to have any weaknesses, at least not on the offensive side of the puck. He is first and foremost a shooter, but he is also a slick passer, a world class skater, and has no compunction about engaging physically. With an arsenal like that it is hard to imagine he won't enjoy tremendous success at the NHL level.

Will we see Nail Yakupov in an Oilers jersey during the upcoming season? Well, assuming there is an upcoming season, of course. The NHL and the NHLPA still have some work to do on the CBA before we see any player in any uniform this fall. However, assuming we don't see a repeat of the lockout that canceled the 2004-05 NHL season there is a very good chance we'll see Yakupov suit up for the Oilers come October. Sure, the Oilers have a plethora of good young forwards that include the likes of Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Jordan Eberle, but Yakupov's strong all around game should allow him to crack the top six on this team that is rapidly gathering what many around the league are calling an embarrassment of riches at the forward position.
