The past few years have been an era of heartache for Toronto Maple Leafs fans. Diehard fans that bleed blue and white have been forced to watch their beloved Buds undergo a painful rebuilding process that has seen them outside the playoffs looking in. They've seen the departure of their longtime captain, Mats Sundin, and haven't had much to cheer about over the past half of the last decade. However, the landscape of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization has undergone significant changes since Brian Burke took the helm of the Leafs and there now appears to be light at the end of the tunnel for long-suffering fans. Burke hasn't been shy in pulling the trigger on deals to improve the club, and his recent blockbuster deal with the Calgary Flames might have the biggest impact on the club going forward.
In the deal he landed Dion Phaneuf, an all-star defenseman known for his booming slapshot and his punishing hits. With the addition of Phaneuf the Leafs now have a defensive core that will be the envy of many other NHL clubs.
