About Daniel Alfredsson
After seeing him for 17 seasons in an Ottawa Senators uniform it is hard to even reconcile Daniel Alfredsson in a Detroit Red Wings jersey. However, after an acrimonious split in the off-season that saw Alfredsson sign with Detroit as an unrestricted free agent, the unthinkable has happened and Alfie now proudly wears the winged wheel upon his chest.
Detroit has had a long history of employing Swedish hockey players, and Alfredsson now enjoys the company of his countrymen and friends he has made over the years while playing for Team Sweden at international events. He seems to have fit in nicely with the Wings and at 41 years of age is enjoying a renaissance year, notching close to a point a game in his first season with the Wings.
Alfredsson may have had many reasons for leaving the Sens and joining the Wings, but the one he pointed to when making the decision was that he thought he would have a better chance to win a Stanley Cup with the Wings. So far his theory has proven correct as the Wings are comfortably ensconced in a playoff spot while the Sens are on the outside looking in. Now, there is still a lot of hockey to be played and a lot of stiff competition, but Alfie certainly looks like he has a shot at finally earning the Stanley Cup ring that has eluded him for so long. Watch for both Wings and Sens fans to cheer him on as he suits up for this season's Winter Classic against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
