More About Bobby Smith

Drafted first overall by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1978 NHL Entry Draft, Bobby Smith quickly showed himself worthy of his high draft selection. The rangy center had an immediate impact for the Stars, scoring 30 goals and notching 74 points in his rookie season, good enough to nab the Calder Trophy. Smith would continue to improve year after year, scoring 25 points in 19 playoff games in 1981, helping the North Stars make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before they bowed out to the powerful New York Islanders.

In 1981-82 Smith would enjoy his best season, racking up 43 goals and 114 points. However, despite his emergence as an NHL superstar he would only last one more full season with the club before being shipped off to the Montreal Canadiens. As it turned out the move would be good for Smith. Teamed up with Mats Naslund, Smith continued to pile up points, and he was a key contributor for the Habs, scoring the Stanley Cup-winning goal in 1986 when they dispatched the Calgary Flames to capture their first championship in 7 years.

Smith would finish his career with the North Stars and when he finally hung up the blades he had established himself among the legends of the game by reaching the 1,000 point plateau.
