About Bobby Ryan

Nothing is going to make Senators fans forget about losing their captain Daniel Alfredsson to Detroit as an unrestricted free agent, but the deal to land coveted power forward Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks will definitely ease the sting.

Bobby Ryan came into the league in the enormous shadow of Sidney Crosby. He was the number two selection in the draft, taken by the Ducks after the Pens snapped up Crosby. While he has not come close to the lofty heights achieved by Sid since then he has acquitted himself more than respectably during his NHL career to date. In 378 games played he has notched an impressive 147 goals and 289 points and has scored better than 30 goals on four separate occasions.

Power forwards that can put the puck in the net are in high demand in the NHL, and the Ducks found themselves with an embarrassment of riches at that particular position, boasting the likes of Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf on their roster. That embarrassment of riches kept trade rumors around the Ducks swirling for years, and when the Ducks locked up both Perry and Getzlaf to lucrative longterm contracts it became glaringly obvious who the odd man out would be. As expected Ryan was shipped in a trade to the Senators, with talented prospect Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a first round pick in 2014 coming the other way.

Senators' fans are salivating at the thought of Ryan playing alongside a healthy Jason Spezza. The slick passing ability of Spezza should nicely compliment Ryan's ability to take the puck in stride and drive the net. Look for the pair of them to give opposing defenders nightmares in the upcoming 2013-14 season.
